I was afraid I was going to have to go back to retail when I was offered a graduate assistantship to build two websites for my library school department. Saying that the director changed the course of my life would be an understatement. Not only did I build two websites for the department, I also discovered a love of teaching. No high quality lesson plans with objectives planned out — tried that and dropped the school librarian route — and instead focused on creating in-person classes the way I had written my public speaking pieces: the day of. So far this has worked well, since I only teach classes on topics I’m passionate about. Eventually my passion for sharing my knowledge with others and web building would lead to a day job and a freelance teaching career. The result of the freelance work is my work, The Comparative Guide to WordPress in Libraries: A LITA Guide.
I am the User Experience Librarian at Darien Library in Connecticut. In the past two years, I’ve reshaped the Library’s Drupal website, created marketing materials, and co-manage the technology education classes. In my free time, I co-teach WordPress classes online to other librarians.
